How to Add New Steps to an Active Campaign

You can add follow-up steps to running campaigns without disrupting your outreach or losing progress.

Step 1: Pause Your Campaign First

Important: Always pause your campaign before adding new steps.

  • Prevents sending issues while you make changes

  • Avoids leads receiving incomplete sequences

  • Ensures all changes are saved properly

To pause your campaign:

  • Go to the Analytics section of your campaign.

  • Click on "Pause campaign"

  • The campaign will change to 'Paused' status


Step 2: Add Follow-up Step

  • Navigate to the "Sequences" tab in your campaign

  • Click the "Add step" button to create a new follow-up step.


Step 3: Set the Wait Time

Choose how long to wait before sending this step:

  • The wait time counts from when the previous step was sent, not when you added the new step.

  • Recommendation: Wait 2-3 days between cold email steps to avoid appearing spammy.


Step 4: Write Your Email Content

  • Subject line: Leave it blank to continue the same email thread (recommended for follow-ups). Or write a new subject line to start a fresh thread.

  • Add Variants (Optional): Click "Add variant" if you want to test different versions. The system will split test automatically.

Ensure to click "Save" after creating each step or variant.


Step 5: Resume Your Campaign

Once you've finished adding all new steps:

  • Go to the Analytics section of your campaign.

  • Click on "Pause campaign"

  • The campaign will change to 'Active' status

  • Your campaign is now active with the new steps included.

  • Leads who haven't replied will automatically receive the new step(if "Stop on reply" is enabled)

The campaign progress may reset after adding a new step to the campaign, as previously completed leads will be reactivated. Once these leads receive all sequences, the progress will increment.
