Setting up Clay and Instantly integration

Updated over a week ago

In this guide, we'll walk you through setting up a highly effective email campaign using Clay and Instantly. You’ll learn how to customize your email body and subject lines, map variables, and connect your Clay table to Instantly. By following these steps, you'll create personalized, relevant emails that stand out and engage your prospects. Let’s get started!

What you need:

  • Your Instantly Account

  • Your Clay Account (Explorer Tier or higher)

  • Your highly personalized and relevant parts of your emails

Prepare the lead table in Clay

To get started, you will need to get the following ready within your enriched Clay Table to get your email ready for Instantly. You can click Add column to create custom columns you need.

  • Email: This is a mandatory field for importing leads into the campaign.

  • Optional variables: First name, Last name, and Company name

  • Custom variables: Other information that may fall into the custom variable category, depending on your email, includes company industry, prospect's job title, location, revenue size, employee count, and more.

  • Personalization: This is the Instantly Variable for your personalized email body based on your research. This could include company news, interviews, or any other interesting details about your prospect. You can use Claygent or other providers within Clay to find your quality research and automate the process.

  • Subject line: Another custom variable/column to consider is your subject line. Each subject line should be personalized based on your email body and relevant to the overall email.

Connecting Instantly to Clay

Once you are satisfied with your email template and lead table, connect to Instantly by following the steps below:

  • In your Clay table, click on the Actions button in the top right corner

  • Type 'Instantly' in the search bar

  • Select the option 'Add Lead to Campaign'

  • Add the Instantly API v2 key to connect your Instantly account.

Mapping variables

Next, map your columns to the appropriate Instantly fields.

  • Select or enter the campaign ID to which you want to send the leads. This is particularly useful if you have multiple campaigns running.

  • Skip if Lead is in Workspace: Enable this option to skip leads that already exist in the workspace to avoid duplicates.

  • Email and Optional fields: Click on each one to type or select a column from the dropdown.

  • Personalization and custom variables: Type / to insert a column.

While only the email variable is required, it is recommended to map all the variables that make your email highly personalized, relevant, and tailored to each prospect and campaign. This includes your personalization, subject line, and other custom variables.

Adding leads to Instantly campaign

Once saved, run your 'Add lead to campaign' column. Each prospect, along with their specific variables, will be added to your campaign and sent out according to your Instantly schedule!

You can also check the status in the 'Add lead to campaign' column.

  • Skipped, already in the workspace: It means the leads already exist in another campaign and have been skipped to avoid duplicates.

  • Added to Campaign: The lead has been imported to the campaign successfully.

  • Missing input: The lead is missing the Email data.
